BR 52 型为区域快车而生，在其辉煌时期，它们奔驰在英国铁路的西部地区，如今则在遗产铁路上享受退休生活。

1955 年，英国铁路现代化的计划出台。该计划呼吁各地区逐渐淘汰蒸汽机车，而改用现代化的内燃机车。大部分铁路网络选择了内燃电力技术，但西部铁路却决定尝试使用液力传动车。

在接下来的几年里，具有不同运输任务的多种机车设计相继诞生，但是最早在上世纪 60 年代前期生产的“西部机车”才是其中最耀眼的。“西部机车”的设计来自德国内燃液力传动技术，它具有两个引擎，共同作用时产生的牵引力比之前制造的机车要大很多。

52 型的时速可达 90 英里/小时，非官方记录的最高时速更是高达 110 英里/小时。不管怎样，它们定义了大西部铁路公司在 60 和 70 年代里高速铁路的运行标准，也证明了液力传动的内燃牵引力可高效作业。不过到 1977 年，该地区的 52 型机车便被更先进的 BR 50 型和英国铁路的旗舰高速列车组替代了。

在总共 74 辆机车中，只有 7 辆被保留下来。这些幸存的机车车况不一，一些仍旧可以运行，并在西萨默赛特铁路线上再次找到了归属。
